Volkswagen Tiguan

Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan holds a unique niche, competing with smaller SUVs, but being the only European SUV that can hover in the price range of many of the other options in this category.

Get To Know The Volkswagen Tiguan

In the beginning (2008), the Tiguan was very much designed with a European sensibility in mind, having tighter handling but a smaller size than other SUVs in the time. In essence, it was made for European streets. However, for its second generation, it would later switch up the formula to match with American streets and needs, with a larger wheelbase.

The Volkswagen Tiguan Today

When talking about the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, note that the U.S.-spec model will only be available in its long-wheelbase version. This is because the added size is a better match for the bigger American streets as well as the expectations for a larger SUV. This wheelbase stretch incorporates a sliding second-row bench and optional third-row seating.

For the engine, you have one option: a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI I-4 making 184 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. This also includes an eight-speed automatic and the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, with four modes for various terrain.

Features for the 2.0T S include:

  • Back-Up Camera
  • Cruise Control
  • Auto-Off Headlights
  • Adjustable Steering Wheel
  • Steering Wheel Controls
  • Trip Computer
  • Intermittent Wipers
  • Variable Speed Intermittent Wipers
  • Keyless Entry
  • Power Door Locks
  • Heated Mirrors
  • Power Mirrors
  • Driver Vanity Mirror
  • Driver Illuminated Vanity Mirror
  • Passenger Vanity Mirror
  • Passenger Illuminated Visor Mirror
  • Power Steering
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • MP3 PlayerSmart Device Integration

The Tiguan also has a great suite of safety options, including a standard rear-view camera and automatic post-collision braking system. You also have an added set of options like adaptive cruise control, a lane departure assist system, blind spot monitor, forward collision warning, and emergency braking.

Overall, the Tiguan has had to have a little reinvention for American audiences, but now, it provides a great mix of German engineering through an American lens.
