Usually, these issues can seriously hinder vehicle safety. For example, a malfunctioning engine control unit can impact performance and fuel efficiency. In some cases, other warning lights will accompany it, namely because it’s integrated with other VW vehicle systems.

What can cause it to turn on? 

The EPC light on your vehicle can turn on for a range of reasons, ranging from a generic warning to a more serious underlying issue. When the drivetrain computer recognizes a read out of a normal system spec, it stores it in the system as an EPC code, automatically placing the vehicle into limp-in mode. 

The potential issues with the vehicle can include: 

• Fuel metering, timing, or emissions malfunctions
• Engine speed sensor failure
• Other malfunctioning sensors, including the crank or cam position sensor, mass airflow sensor, and the brake light switch
• Traction control problems
• Vehicle stability control problems
